Hi-EFECTS project meeting at Lund University: Advancing Our Understanding of Near-wall Ammonia Combustion

On June 4–5, 2026, the Hi-EFECTS project team gathered at Lund University, Sweden, for two days of engaging technical discussions, knowledge exchange, and collaboration.

Participants from NTNU, Wärtsilä, Lund University, Aalto University, Stolt Tankers, and the World Maritime University came together to discuss recent progress in green-fuel combustion technologies for sustainable maritime transport.

The meeting is part of the Hi-EFECTS project under the Nordic Grand Solutions Programme, funded by Nordic Energy Research.

Key technical topics included:

Flame–wall interactions and their influence on NO, N₂O, and NH₃ emissions in ammonia-fueled engines
Diesel–ammonia spray interactions under direct-injection,dual-fuel marine-engine conditions
Experimental validation and advanced simulation models for ammonia combustion

Beyond the technical sessions, the team discussed practical challenges facing future maritime transport and how green-fuel technologies can contribute to the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to connect experimental research, numerical modeling, engine development, and real-world maritime applications—and to strengthen collaboration across academia and industry.
