Ammonia-ammonium nitrate-water fuel

July 10, 2025

An article published under the umbrella of the Hi-EFECTS project efforts, simulated the ignition of ammonia-ammonium nitrate-water fuel mixtures for maritime use. In this work, Biran Senghore and co-authors explored how these ternary fuel blends can result in a carbonless fuel that is ignitable in a marine diesel engine, without the need for any pilot-fuel injections, and is expected to be as cheap as ammonia, whilst having a potentially lower climate impact.

A ternary mixture of ammonia + ammonium nitrate + water:

 √ Contains no carbon

√ Is liquid under atmospheric conditions

√ Is directly ignitable in a diesel engine, without the need for a pilot-fuel injection

√ Can have less climate impact than ammonia with fossil pilot fuel

√ Have a comparable cost to ammonia
